In onze biotoop - planten krijgen er geen water, we voederen ze met geluidsgolven - geldt het Japanse Cubicfabric, en het moederhuis Cubicmusic, al sinds hun ontstaan als een keurmerk. Je haalt hun platen slechts met mondjesmaat boven. Bij voorkeur als de nacht valt en we de planten nog moeten voederen. Hun drie platen zijn verpakt in sobere witte hoesjes en de muziek, non-indentified elektronica, is al even minimaal ingekleurd. Vooral het Italiaanse Z_e_l_l_e zweert op ?rjctd::nw1 bij minimale, monotone geluiden. Chirurgische klanken worden met precieze op het zilveren schijfje gepast. Het doet vaak denken aan de Zwitser Ralph Steinbruchel (Domizil, 12k) die eveneens met veel oog voor detail zijn eigen microscopische leefwereld creeert. Vaak haast geluidloos, maar op het zelfde moment erg intens. Dat Cubicfabric de vinger aan de pols heeft bewijzen ze met de remixplaat ?Operette1. Hier laten ze het debuut van het Zweedse Tape (uit op Hapna) vakkundig herkneden door een schare geluidskunstenaars. Herkneden of transformeren zijn de juiste termen want zowel David Grubbs, Pita als Hazard turnen de originele nummers volledig om tot eigen creaties. Vooral de keuze van de line-up - een wie is wie is in het heden en de toekomst van de elektronica - en het hoge niveau van de nummers bewijst dat we nog veel mogen verwachten van Cubicfabric. Uiterst geschikt om uw planten te voederen, maar dat had u al begrepen.

Assumant la paternite d1un precedent album paru sur Line (nth), division concrete du minimaliste et laptopien label 12K (Taylor Deupree), ce duo italien, compose de Maurizio Martusciello et Nicola Catalano, a su tirer les lecons des paires de la musique concrete, Schaeffer en tete de proue.
Bardes d1une ideologie proto moderniste, composee d1electronica, de champs magnetiques digitaux, de micro-evenements (Glitch, click1n cuts, microsound), les 2 comperes ont su rendre palpables des declivites et autres micro reliefs seulement lisibles jusqu1alors en filigranes, par touches fugitives, perissables. Quelque chose comme du Seurat a l1air digital.
Poussant plus en avant leur recherche, et forts de leurs apports annexes (tels que des travaux autour de la batterie sur Metamkine) ils reviennent avec cet album spectral, fruit d1une vision naturee de leur imaginaire, qui a la facon d1un corps celeste lumineux, ne se laisse jamais regarder de face, mais necessite une observation peripherique pour en desceller les caracteristiques et la beaute formelle. Un monde de vibrations, de gresillements, de disparitions et d1evanescence, de chaleur et de basse temperature, d1isolement et de fourmillements veritables.

The sounds ringing in your ears are filtered sinewaves that are tuning fork pitch perfect. The most current z_e_l_l_e (Nicola Catalano, Maurizio Martusciello), rjctd::nw , was recorded between 2000-01 in Rome and parts are like the end reel of a film still spinning sans projectionist. Yet, when reminded each day I step into most urban settings to hear the motors and warnings of dump trucks and cranes backing up, changing gears and directives, this recording becomes a kinder, gentler lullaby of such gestures. Embodying the guise of what makes up the term microsound, the Italian duo strip down sound to its finest, sheerest elements, maybe even molecular structures. After a great debut on Line's nth they seem to have only taken their sound further down a warm path patterned by dissonant bright dots and sparkling minimalism. z_e_l_l_e's work is sketchy and encoded, sparse and meditative. The science of sprite noise is modulated by startlingly minuscule tonal experiments. In the end, a colony of digitized crickets surround and otherwise cordon off a hypersensitive bionetwork.

Z_E_L_L_E - RJCTD::NW (CD by Cubic Fabric) You should know z_e_l_l_e if you know about Metaxu. If you don't know Metaxu, check Vital 406. But also, maybe you already know z_e_l_l_e from their first album Nth released by Line in 2001. As it's written on the nicely designed (by Keiichi Sugimoto of Cubic Music) cover of their new second album, z_e_l_l_e are Nicola Catalano and Maurizio Martusciello, both from Rome, Italy. With this release they continue to explore the silent edges of sound, doing that with great care for sound. Only small and short clicky and wavy sounds of various kinds appear in the silence, very minimalistic and microsounding approach again. You should turn up the volume more than usual to hear better, and not using headphones is recommended if you ask me, because open space is important for this music to fuse with the surrounding. z.e.l.l.e are good at what they're doing and I like it so far.
But I wouldn't like to hear 10 more albums like this in the future, because I think there's not much space le ft for being inventive in the same musical outfit. Maybe z.e.l.l.e should go more in the foreground and explore even more fully present music (like Metaxu). Nicola once told me that these tracks are older, from the Nth period, but Cubic Fabric were enthusiastic about them, and that's great because this is minimalistic music of the finest kind.
